Festivals in Delhi

Colourful festivals are a part of the Indian culture and there are festivals aplenty which are celebrated in the capital city throughout the year.

Lohri (13 Jan)- Celebrated by the people of Punjab to signify the end of the winter season, this is a colourful festivals where people arrange bonfires and sing and dance through all night.

Makar Sankranti (14 Jan)- One of the most celebrated festivals of the Hindus. The well-known Kite Festival is also held during this day in Connaught Place, above the underground market Palika Bazar.

Basant Panchami (2 Feb)- This festival is conducted to mark the advent of Spring and the end of the winter season.

Thyagaraja Festival (Feb)- The Mughal gardens are full of blooming flowers at this time and this festival celebrates the music, dance and song of South India in the Vaikunthnath Temple.

Maha Shivratri (Mar)- Hindus worship the Lord Shiva on this day. Mythology has it that it was on this day Lord Shiva had performed the ‘Tandava Dance’. Devotees worship the God throughout the night in temples all over Delhi and also other parts of the country.

Amir Khusraus’s Anniversary (Apr)- On this day a fair is organised in Nizamuddin and prayers are held to pay respect to his soul.

Baisakhi (13 Apr)- This festival celebrates the beginning of the harvest season.

Buddha Jayanti (May)- This festival celebrates the birth of Gautam Buddha and of his attaining Enlightment.

Mahavir Jayanti (May)- This festival celebrates the birth of the founder of the Jain religion.

International Mango Festival (May)- This is one of the most amusing festivals where more than 500 types of mangoes are put on display and people can taste them and also take part in cultural programme.

Qutub Festival (Oct)- Organised by the Delhi Tourism this festival commemorates the magnificent monument from the 12th century.

Guru Parab (Dec)- This festival marks the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. Festivals are organised in Gurdwaras to pay respect to the first Guru.
